Progress in context

How the progress estimate works

The Reading tool gives you a realistic estimate of how much time you'll need to set aside for each book. The estimates are based on the book's total word count and an average reading speed of about 230 words per minute. They are approximate, not exact, and your own pace may vary.

The catalog includes a wide range of lengths. Some books can be finished in under an hour, while others may take many days of dedicated reading. Use the tool to find a book that fits your available time.

Quick Reads

18 books are estimated to take under 2 hours. These are ideal for a short sitting. Examples include 'Fragments from France' at 34 minutes and 'For the defence of Canada' at 53 minutes.

Steady Reads

26 books fall in the 2-4 hour range. These offer a more substantial engagement without being overwhelming. 'Their Crimes' is estimated at 76 minutes, and 'The Children of France' at 135 minutes.

Immersive Reads

35 books are in the 4-8 hour category, suitable for a day of focused reading. 'The War and the Churches' is 171 minutes, while 'The army behind the army' is 562 minutes.

Marathon Reads

18 books exceed 8 hours. These are major works that demand significant time and attention. 'The Roll of Honour, Volume 1' is estimated at 3,387 minutes (over 56 hours).

Reading Tracker Guide

Planning Your Reading with the Tracker

Reading Tracker is a simple tool for monitoring your progress through a book. It records pages, not sections or minutes. You set a current page, total pages, and a daily page goal, and the tracker estimates how many days it will take to finish, based on your goal. It also shows estimated remaining time in minutes, proportional to the pages left. The tracker stores your history in your browser's localStorage, so no account is needed.

Setting up your book

To begin, you need to know the total number of pages. If the catalog does not provide a page count, the tracker estimates it by dividing the word count by 250 (the configured words per page). For example, The History of the Revolutions of Portugal — A Closer Reading has 71,265 words, so the initial estimate would be 285 pages (71,265 / 250 = 285.06, rounded up). You can replace this estimate with the total page count from your own edition, if it differs.

The tracker also asks for your current page. If you are just starting, that would be 1. If you are partway through, enter the page you are on. The daily page goal defaults to 20 pages, but you can adjust it to match your available reading time.

Understanding the estimates

The tracker calculates two key numbers: estimated remaining time and estimated finish days. The remaining time is derived from the catalog's estimated reading minutes, scaled by the fraction of pages left. For The History of the Revolutions of Portugal, the catalog estimates 310 minutes total. If you are halfway through (page 143 of 285), the remaining time would be roughly 155 minutes (310 × 142/285).

The finish days are simpler: divide the remaining pages by your daily goal. With 285 pages and a goal of 20 pages per day, you would finish in about 15 days (285 / 20 = 14.25, rounded up to 15). If you increase your goal to 30 pages per day, that drops to 10 days. These estimates help you plan your reading around your schedule.

Using the tracker for long books

The tracker is especially useful for long works, where a vague sense of 'I'll get to it eventually' can easily fade. For a book like The History of the Revolutions of Portugal, with its 310-minute estimate, a daily goal of 20 pages gives you a concrete target. You can see your progress page by page, and the estimated finish date keeps you motivated.

If you find that your daily goal is too ambitious, you can adjust it downward. The tracker will recalculate the finish days accordingly. Conversely, if you are making good progress, you might increase your goal to finish sooner. The tool is flexible, and because it stores your history in the browser, you can pick up where you left off without any setup.
